Who was Masood Azhar ?
Masood Azhar, born in 1968, was a Pakistani leader of the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), a designated terrorist organization active in the Kashmir region and beyond. Regarded as one of the most wanted terrorists in India, his life revolved around militant ideology and violence.
Azhar’s journey began in religious schools, eventually leading him to jihad training in Afghanistan. He rose through the ranks of Harkat-ul-Ansar, a militant group, before founding the JeM in 2000. From his sermons inciting attacks to financing terror networks, Azhar became the mastermind behind numerous assaults, including the deadly 2019 Pulwama bombing in India.
His capture became a diplomatic tug-of-war. Released by India in 1999 under pressure, Azhar enjoyed hero status in sections of Pakistan while India and others relentlessly pursued his designation as a global terrorist. The UN Security Council finally succumbed in 2019, but his whereabouts remain murky, fueled by speculation and accusations against Pakistan.
Azhar’s legacy paints a grim picture of extremism and its devastating consequences. He embodied the complex reality of cross-border terrorism, leaving behind a trail of pain and a challenge for regional stability
